Mercedes Benz, the German carmaker, has launched the 2nd generation of GLC in the Indian market. The new GLC has undergone some design upliftment, refreshed interiors, and added technology, making it a showstopper. The code of GLC launched in the USA market last year was X254, and it took quite some time to arrive in the Indian market. GLC stands for Geländewagen Leichtbau Coupé in German, which means Off-Road Lightweight Coupé. The C in the name signifies that the SUV is equal to the C-Class.
Design
The updated car exterior boasts a brand new grill that showcases a prominent Mercedes emblem enclosed in chrome housing, alongside horizontal metal accents that highlight the logo with brushed aluminum touches. A chrome trapezoidal frame situated lower on the front bumper completes the SUV’s sleek design. Additionally, the car features newly designed LED headlamps that serve as multifunctional DRL, functioning as turn indicators, and LED tail lamps.
The GLC has a sleek side profile with no sharp creases. It boasts chrome trimming on the windows, 19-inch 5-spoke lightweight alloy wheels with 235/55 R19 tires, and aluminum-finished running footboards. The tail lamp design may resemble that of the new-gen Mercedes, but it gives the GLC its distinct identity. The rear of the car also features chrome trimming, including around the exhaust vents, although the actual exhaust is hidden.
The cabin of the car is designed to provide a luxurious experience, with a feel similar to that of an elevated C-Class. The dashboard is covered with soft-touch materials that feel plush to the touch. The highlight of the cabin is the two large screens situated in the center. The first one is an 11.9-inch portrait-style touchscreen infotainment screen that is tilted at a 6-degree angle towards the driver for better visibility. The screen is loaded with the new MBUX infotainment system (NTG7 interface) and is capable of receiving OTA (Over-the-Air) updates. The screen also features a fingerprint sensor that enables personalized profiles with payment functionality. The second screen is a 12.3-inch LED display that serves as a customizable instrument cluster, allowing the driver to choose between sports, comfort, and maps modes.
Under the hood, you have two high-powered engine options. The first one is a 2-liter 4-cylinder turbo petrol engine with mild hybrid technology and a plate number of GLC300. It can generate an output of 258 horsepower (as confirmed by +23hp from mild hybrid) and 400 Newton-meters of torque (as confirmed by +200NM). This engine is paired with a 9G-TRONIC gearbox. The second engine option is a GLC220d, which is a 2-liter 4-cylinder turbo diesel engine with mild hybrid technology. It can produce 197 horsepower (as confirmed by +23hp from mild hybrid) and 440 Newton-meters of torque (as confirmed by +200NM). This engine is paired with a 9G-TRONIC automatic gearbox.
Mild hybrid technology enhances the performance and efficiency of a vehicle. An integrated starter motor generator in the SUV recharges the battery while decelerating. The SUV is equipped with five driving modes: ECO, Comfort, Sports, Offroad, and Individual, allowing drivers to customize the performance to their preferences. Unfortunately, the Indian market does not offer a rear steering feature.
As per the ARAI tests, the claimed mileage figures for petrol and diesel engines are around 14.73 kmpl and 19.47 kmpl respectively.

This vehicle boasts an impressive array of safety features, such as 7 airbags, Hill Descent Control, and level 2 ADAS (Active Lane Keep Assist, Active Brake Assist, Blind Spot Assist). Additionally, it offers a 360-degree camera and a unique feature: a transparent bonnet that displays the view beneath the front wheels in Off-road mode. The HVAC system (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) is seamlessly integrated into the 12-inch touchscreen, and the front seats are power-adjustable with heating capabilities (though they do not include ventilation or massage features).
The SUV is 1640mm high, which is 4mm smaller than the previous generation. However, the length of the vehicle has been increased by 60mm, making it 4716mm long. The wheelbase has also been increased by 15mm to 2888mm, while the width remains the same at 1890mm, and the ground clearance is 180mm.
